A Review of Christina Aguilera's "Not Myself Tonight".

Before I start, I would like to give a quick hello to everyone! No one is reading (yet!) but I made a promise to myself that I will keep writing as much as I could, anywhere and everywhere. So that being said, we are just going to jump into the topic for this entry.

Yesterday, Christina Aguilera released "Not Myself Tonight", which is the lead single off her fourth studio album, Bionic. The song was written by Ester Dean(Rihanna's Rude Boy, PCD's Jai Ho, etc) and Polow Da Don, who also produced the song. His production credits include Chris Brown's Forever, Esmee Denter's Outta Here, Robin Thicke's Sex Therapy, etc.

First and foremost, I am by no means a Christina Aguilera fan, however I believe all music should be given a chance and treated fairly. I do happen to enjoy a lot of her music because she has more than a couple of solid singles under her belt("The Voice Within", anyone?). That being said... let's go!

The song kick's off with Christina whispering "You know tonight, I'm feeling a little out of control. Is this me? You wanna get crazy? Cuz I don't give a -scream-". Sounds a bit familiar doesn't it? Leave the whispering to Britney Spears. The song starts with a uptempo mediocre beat that takes me back to 2003. "Someone call the doctor cuz I lost my mind!" the Dirrty singer whispers. I usually complain about Christina Aguilera over-singing everything until the end of days however in this song she keeps her cool. Besides the beat, I think that is the only thing I like about the song. The lyrics ("Im taking shots and I'm feeling fine, I'm kissin' on the boys and the girls"), to be honest, sound like a cry of help. It doesn't get better after that. So, this is where I stop listening to the song over and over with my intent on reviewing it and moving on.

The last effort by Christina Aguilera was "Keeps Getting Better", which to be honest it was good but at the time Lady Gaga came out and took over Pop music as we know it. She(Gaga) came out with something we haven't really heard of and kept us wanting more. To me, this song screams "look at me, look at me". "Back to Basics" was a pretty solid album taking music back to earlier times and remixing it with what was hot at the time. So it worked, this takes me back to 2003, maybe even to 1999. It sounds like a remixed Whitney Houston song(think "My Love is your Love").

Here's what other music fans had to say:

"Xtina stan here, but I'm not feeling it."

"Sounds like a Lindsay Lohan reject."

"Britney pumps out better crap with half the talent, effort and mental capacity. This is sooo underwhelming!"

"lol it's not THAT bad, but it isn't really that good either. it's w/e. it's a possible grower though. It's kind of all over the place. It's like if break the ice and sexyback had a baby, but something wrong happened along the way."

"Didn't really care for it."

Some people have hope though:

"im gonna give it a few more listens because i really like xtina."

"I am a sucker for club anthems and tbh this song is fire. It takes a minute to get going but I'm loving it. If she wants to do the electro club diva thing for an album, I seriously don't mind."

"I like it, but I don't love just yet. We'll see after a few more listens. After it being said that she wasn't going to be "belting" at me so much, I felt kinda like she was still screaming at me. But this is a club banger, so hopefully the rest of the album showcases the new, 'softer' Christina. No one part seemed particularly catchy to me. I hope it'll grow on me."

"It's actually a grower. Disappointing at first, but it's still a good club hit."

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I have friends who are in love with the song while others hate it. My take on it: boring, outdated, generic. It sounds like a demo or a B-side. It does not sound like it should be a single, let alone LEAD single. The other people have had better lead singles("Womanizer", "Bad Romance", "Single Ladies", etc), and this doesn't really make up for the last four years you haven't been around Christina. Sorry.

This song gets a D in my book. It's passing but that is all it is. Granted, if the song comes in the club, I will dance to it. Even though there is nothing special or catchy about the lyrics, the beat is pretty good. However, I'm not surprised, amazed, mesmerized, etc. by this. It's just another song. Let's hope "Bionic" has better crap than this... at least for the sake of Christina Aguilera's career.
